Knowing what insurance cover you need in any profession can be quite confusing, especially with so many different insurance products available. There are two different types of insurance that a builder needs and some other extras that are advisable.

Public Liability

This type of insurance is essential for anyone who wants to work as a builder. It isn’t a legal requirement, but protects your business if someone is injured by your business and also if you cause any damage to someone else’s property whilst you work. Public liability has lots of different aspects to it, so you should always look carefully at what is being included in any policy.

Employers’ Liability

If you have employees then you will need as soon as you start employing them. It is a legal requirement and you can be fined £2,500 every day if you are not properly insured. Employers’ liability insurance helps to compensate employees if they become injured or ill as a result of the work they do for you.

Business Use Insurance

Business vehicle insurance cover is a legal requirement whenever you are using a vehicle for business purposes, if you are using your vehicle for business and don’t have business use on your insurance policy then your vehicle isn’t insured.

Tools Cover

Having tools cover is another type of insurance that isn’t a requirement but it is sensible. If your tools get stolen from your vehicle then you won’t have the expense of replacing them or if you damage or lose your tools whilst you are working.
